Robert-Jan Lacombe's short film "Kwa Heri Mandima" (Goodbye Mandima) tells the story of Lacombe's childhod, when he was forced to leave the small African village of Mandima where he grew up to return to Europe with his parents. The film uses personal photographs and Lacombe's own lyrical narration told in second-person present tense.
Says Short of the Week, "Spare, with very little sound design and no music, the film is emotionally powerful. Absent other adornment, his voice lures you into a trance, and you eat up of the seemingly inconsequential details of the day, waiting for the devastating knockout punch you intrinsically know must be coming."
